If you are ever around Bang Kruai–Sai Noi Road or the Bang Bua Thong area, we want to introduce you to Saithong Mango Sticky Rice (Khaoniaow Mamuang Saithong), the most popular dessert shop in the neighbourhood.
How to get there
Getting there is easy. By car, turn in at Sai Noi intersection and keep going until you are almost at the Metropolitan Electricity Authority office for Bang Bua Thong. There is a U-turn right in front of it. After the U-turn, drive a little further until you see an NGV gas station, then slow down: the shop is just three shophouses past the station.
Without a car, take a van marked Sai Noi from Sai Noi intersection and ask the driver to stop at Imperial village. Walk about 50 metres up to Rung Rueang rice porridge shop, then cross the road and you are there.
What makes it special
Honestly, it is all about the coconut sticky rice: fragrant, sweet, soft and perfectly balanced. Mangoes are sold by season, so they are always fragrant and juicy. If the shop cannot find mangoes, or they are not ripe in time, there is no mango that day. Come during mango season and you can choose from several varieties, including Ok Rong, Thao Yai Mom, Nam Dok Mai, Sarika and Kaew Khamin. If you are lucky enough to visit in durian season, you might even get durian sticky rice.
Besides the signature mango sticky rice, there are other toppings too. The salty-sweet fish flake topping (na pla pon) goes really well with the sticky rice, and you can also buy plain sticky rice to eat with chilled watermelon at home. The homemade custard (sangkhaya) is made with no flour at all, so it is smooth and silky. The shop also took part in the government Khon La Khrueng and Rao Chana co-payment schemes.
