Chicken Noodle Soup with Bitter Gourd

Today we tried the chicken and bitter gourd noodles, the shop's signature dish. The noodles are soft and chewy, the chicken is boiled until perfectly tender and, most importantly, there's loads of it (it looks like a little in the photo, but there's really a lot): drumsticks, feet, joints and chicken blood. The broth is nicely seasoned. Add a little seasoning to your liking and it's delicious.

For noodles, there are thin rice noodles, wide rice noodles, egg noodles and instant noodles, so pick whatever you like. Or order it as a soup without noodles, add an extra drumstick and eat it with hot steamed rice. You'll be full and happy.

The shop also provides vegetables, and of course the essential one is bitter gourd, washed clean and thinly sliced. Eaten with the noodles, it adds a slight bitterness that's really tasty. Once you've tried it, you'll want to come back. If you can't finish, you can take it home (the portions really are huge).

Here's a little tip: the shop also sells seaweed. Buy a pack and eat it along with your chicken noodles. Wow, so good and fun to eat. It's an unusual pairing but it works. You'd normally eat seaweed with rice, Korean-style, but it goes great in chicken and bitter gourd noodle soup too. Give it a try.

The Shop

The shop is right on the roadside, so it's easy to find. It's very simple, there's parking and you can sit and eat at your leisure. Around midday it can get a bit hot, but there's a constant cool breeze and the shop has fans. There are plenty of seats, since some regulars order to take home. Best of all, the owner is always polite and smiling with customers, which made a great impression on us.

For drinks there's water and soft drinks. The shop also sells made-to-order dishes and homemade desserts, so you can be sure they're tasty.
