It has a relaxed atmosphere on the banks of Khlong Bang Luang, art to enjoy, and food, Thai desserts, bakery items and drinks. If you need a change of scene for work, you can work here too. It is quiet, chilled and peaceful, and it can turn a boring day into a good one.

History of Artist House

Artist House on Khlong Bang Luang is an art hub created as a rehearsal space for khon masked dance and a venue for small puppet theatre by the Kham Nai troupe. It is a place that preserves, continues and shares Thai arts such as khon. It was founded on 9 September 2010. The house once belonged to an old family of goldsmiths and was later renovated into a visitor attraction where artists who love art can show their work to the public and to art lovers. The building is an L-shaped wooden house in the Manila style, built around an old chedi with redented corners (twelve-indented style), thought to be one of four chedis marking the boundaries of the old grounds of Wat Kamphaeng. The building was later fully renovated by a group of artists.

What to see and do

Artist House is an old two-storey wooden house on the canal, which we think is at least 100 years old. Inside there is a small chedi within the house. It is a great place to relax or take beautiful photos, and the staff are lovely and friendly. There are small art activities for children. From Monday to Friday, the puppets are kept on the upper floor, where you can see and photograph them. On Saturdays and Sundays all the puppets are taken to the courtyard of Wat Kamphaeng Bang Chak, less than a five-minute walk away, for a show at 14:00 performed by children. It is not a grand production, but the performers' dedication is truly admirable.

Overall, we love that it is not crowded. The shops around here trade in the traditional canal-side way, and the food is tasty and cheap. Sometimes in the evening, older vendors paddle by in boats selling food, which is delicious and inexpensive. We once had grilled chicken and grilled chicken liver from a passing boat vendor, which was fun and exciting. A great experience; we never expected Bangkok to have somewhere this charming and peaceful. We loved it and will definitely be back.
