Aisah Rot Dee is a Muslim restaurant that has been in the Khao San neighborhood for ages, and many people will know how good it is. It has been open for more than 40 years, since 1975. The menu is varied: khao mok (spiced rice) with beef or chicken, kao lao soup and beef satay.

The shop's story

The secret behind Aisah's chicken khao mok goes back to the owner's grandparents, who came from Indonesia to settle in Thailand and started selling their signature chicken khao mok. The key is the rice: it must be jasmine rice aged for 2 years, so it isn't sticky. Cooked with the curry paste, it absorbs the flavors and turns fragrant and soft. The butter must be imported from New Zealand. Although the shop recently moved into a larger shophouse, the flavor hasn't changed, so people keep coming back. Personally, we love halal food – we find it clean and carefully prepared.

Beef khao mok (65 baht) – Rice cooked with spices until fragrant and a beautiful yellow. The beef is shank, simmered with spices until tender, topped with freshly fried shallots and served with the house dipping sauce. The rice is aromatic with layers of spice, and the sweet-sour sauce goes perfectly with it.

Beef satay (10 skewers for 80 baht) – Marinated beef is skewered and grilled, basted with coconut milk and oil along the way for aroma and tenderness. It's served with peanut sauce and ajad (cucumber relish) to cut the richness. Tender, fragrant and well rounded – we loved it.
