Chiang Mai is a province so many people love. Today we are taking you to Huen Thung Chiang Mai, a restaurant you must visit when you come to the city for genuine northern Thai food.

Ready? Let's go. Today we are visiting Huen Thung Chiang Mai, which in central Thai means "the restaurant that has reached Chiang Mai". It is in the city, with a relaxed atmosphere and a menu of authentic northern dishes, every one rich and full-flavoured. The hang le curry in particular is fragrant with curry paste, with tender pork that has just a little fat. With hot sticky rice, it is, as northerners say, seriously delicious.

Northern Thai favourites, loved by locals
Huen Thung Chiang Mai is a local restaurant that many visitors to Chiang Mai make a point of stopping at. There are lots of local dishes to choose from, all with a truly local taste: red ant eggs, nham sausage baked in egg, hed thob mushroom curry, hang le curry, pu ong crab paste, nam phrik num green chilli dip, northern-style pork larb and many more. You will struggle to choose. Prices are reasonable too. It is not just for tourists: locals eat here regularly, and as further proof of the quality, it is listed in the Michelin Guide Thailand.
Everything here is delicious. We tried several dishes, all northern in flavour but balanced in intensity.

Chicken khao soi
A medium-strength flavour, though not too bland, with a big chicken drumstick. Delicious, and we recommend it. The curry broth is fragrant with coconut milk and well rounded, the chicken is tender, and the noodles are soft and just right.

Khanom jeen nam ngiao
The flavour is not very strong, but it is well balanced. Personally, we like it this way, but if it is not punchy enough for you, you can season it to taste.
Sai ua sausage
Packed full of filling, and with sticky rice it is wonderfully savoury. Tasty and not greasy, so it is easy to keep eating.

Snail curry
Nicely seasoned and not too bland. Eaten with the sai ua, it is a real treat and very filling.
We think northern Thai food really should be eaten in the north. Eating here, the flavours feel right compared with many places in Bangkok, where we still haven't found one that truly nails it.
If you are in Chiang Mai and don't know where to go, we recommend this place. The restaurant, with its gabled, thatched roof, is not far from Chiang Mai University. Inside, it is simply decorated in a rustic style. It has drawn a steady stream of locals for more than a decade thanks to its delicious northern food and friendly prices. The dishes may not be beautifully plated, but the flavours and textures are excellent. Must-try dishes include the northern appetiser platter and khao soi, and the staff are friendly too. We definitely recommend it.
